Mobility Equipment Grants

Helping children move, participate and live more independently

The Mobility Equipment Grant is designed to help provide mobility equipment that may not be easily available through standard services, giving children the tools they need to move through the world with greater confidence, safety and freedom.

You may be eligible if:

• The child is aged 0-18 years or under
• The child has a disability or long-term health condition as recognised by a designated health professional.
• The family household income is below $130,000 per year
• The child lives in NSW or the ACT
• The item is not funded through the NDIS or other services. Variety supports children who have no other options available.
• Families who are non-citizens, temporary visa holders or refugees may also apply.

What can this grant support?

Eligible requests may include:

• Adaptive toys and safety equipment
• Special needs strollers and pushchairs
Wheelchairs
• Adaptive seating and specialised car seats
• Modified bikes, trikes and scooters
• Partial funding for assistance dogs where they support mobility and independence

Documents Required To Apply

These documents are usually easy to gather and many families already have them ready.

A medical letter

A letter from your GP, Paediatrician or Specialist that:

• It must dated within the last 6 months
• Explains your child's diagnosis, disability or medical condition
• Outlines how the requested equipment will support your child's needs

Support Letter

A support letter from an allied health professional such as an:

• Occupational Therapist
• Physiotherapist
• Speech Pathologist
• Other allied health professional

The letter should explain why the equipment is recommended and how it will benefit your child.

Equipment Quotes

Please provide:

• Two quotes from suppliers
• It must dated within the last 3 months
• Clearly outline the item specifications and cost

Proof of Household Income

For employed applicants:

• Two most recent payslips
• Centrelink Income Statement (if applicable)

For unemployed applicants:

• Three months of recent bank statements
• Centrelink Income Statement (if applicable)

NDIS Funding

If your child has NDIS Funding provide the following:
• Explain why item(s) requested are not included in child’s NDIS plan
• Provide a copy of the decision letter from the NDIS.

How the Application Process Works

Our team carefully and confidentially reviews every application. You will be notified of the outcome within 6-12 weeks. If approved, the grant must be used within 12 months of the approval date.

Application

Fill in the form and include requested documents.

Assessment

Our team reviews your application to make sure it meets the guidelines and may request additional information if required. If eligible, it will be reviewed by our Grants Committee.

Outcome

Every submitted application will receive written confirmation of the outcome of their application via email.

Successful applicants will be asked to complete a short survey to help Variety measure their impact. This will be emailed to the applicants.

Frequently Asked Questions

You are eligible to apply for a personal grant provided that the beneficiary of the grant:

• is a resident in NSW or ACT

• is aged 18 or under

• lives with a disability or long-term health condition as recognised by a designated health professional.

• the family household income is below $130,000 per annum (this includes child support payments, rental income, investment income or any other income that is received by any parent/carer who is financially responsible for the beneficiary

• the beneficiary has not previously received grants from Variety NSW/ACT that total more than $50,000.

Our current grant priorities are, but not limited to:

• adaptive toys

• robotic feeders

• special needs strollers and pushchairs

• wheelchairs – powered/electric/manual/sports (must be assessed, prescribed, and trialed by a licensed OT)

• Carrot Car Seats

• paediatric wheelchairs e.g. Permobil Koala and Wizzy Bugs

• bikes – including modified bikes, trikes and scooters

• Race Runners

Applications for our Mobility Equipment Grant can be submitted all year round.

Applications are made on behalf of the child by a parent/carer or another identified support person (medical professional, caseworker, teacher etc.) aged 18 years and over.

The applicant’s family household gross income needs to below $130,000 per annum. This income includes child support payments, rental income, investment income or any other income that is received by any parent/carer who is financially responsible for the beneficiary.

The role of the support person is to advocate on behalf of the child and explain how the child will benefit from the equipment. The support person (such as an occupational therapist, speech therapist, physiotherapist or pediatrician) should be able to address the following criteria:

i. the need for the request

ii. how the request will support the overall care plan and benefit the child

iii. evidence of a trial of the equipment (if applicable).

If your grant application is approved, you will receive an outcome letter with full instructions for invoice payments. All payments are uploaded into our payment portal.

Invoices
Provide your chosen supplier with a copy of your outcome letter.

Invoices should include:

  • Addressed to: Variety – the Children’s Charity NSW/ACT
  • Provider’s ABN
  • GST (if not applicable it needs to show this)
  • Provider’s bank details
  • Providers name, address, phone number and email
  • References the child’s name or VAR

Reimbursement
We will require an itemised tax receipt for reimbursements.

Receipts should show:

  • Business name and ABN
  • Date after the grant was approved
  • List items purchased
  • GST (if not applicable it needs to show this)
  • Payment method or showing balance of 0.00

The payment of invoices and reimbursements can take up to 3 weeks.

Here’s what happens when you send through and application to Variety

Application Steps

  1. Submission of Grant application.
  2. Grant initially assessed by Variety Kids Support Team.
  3. Eligible submissions are presented to the Kids Support Committee for appoval.
  4. Kids Support Committee meeting reviews applications.
  5. Outcome letters are emailed to applicants.
  6. Successful applicants upload supplier invoice to Variety account portal.
  7. Payment is finalised and supplier arranges delivery directly with applicant.
  8. Variety checks in 3-6 months into grant period. At the end of the 12 months a short survey will be emailed.
